When Will It All End?

End of the world: Coronavirus 'increasing intensity and frequency ...

“When will this end?” “I wish coronavirus would just do one now and leave us alone.” Even “The Government needs an exit strategy”. I’m sure you have heard, or even thought and said, something similar. For those living on their own, or for single parent families, it already feels like we have been in lockdown for ever – and its really hard. It’s also really hard to answer those questions because the honest answer is, we just don’t know. We can make some guesses based on what’s happening in other countries, but no one can say for sure. All we can do is wait, watch, pray, keep our distance from others, and wash our hands.

Added to this, many people are wondering if this coronavirus is a sign that the end of the world is looming, pointing to the words of Jesus in Luke 21 (also Matthew 24, Mark 13) that, “nation will rise against nation…there will be great earthquakes,  famines and pestilences in various places” (verses 10 and 11). These, and other signs, says Jesus will happen before “the end.” And many people are genuinely scared about that, while others try to work out precise dates and times (remember it was all going to end in 2000 with the Millennium bug, or in 2012? Good movie, bad theology!)

Christians should not worry about these things. Jesus Himself says, “When you hear about (these things) do not be frightened.” (Luke 21v9) And of course for those who believe in Jesus, there is no “end of the world” to worry about. The Book of Revelation clearly states that when Jesus returns there will be “a new heaven and a new earth” (Rev 21v1), far better than the one we currently inhabit. Jesus says that the things we are experiencing now are like birth pains as all of creation waits and aches for HIs return.

So believer, see what is going on around you and take note, but try not to be afraid. All of these things have been prophesied in God’s Word. he already knew about them, and how long they will last. So turn to Him, pray to Him, ask whatever you need of Him to get you and those you love through these difficult times. But be assured, He is in control.

One last thing – don’t get caught up in trying to work out dates or times. Jesus clearly says in Mark 14v32 to 37, “no-one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come…therefore keep watch…I say to everyone, ‘Watch!'” Be on the lookout and be ready to welcome Jesus when He does return, whenever that might be. And pray – for our families, our nations, our world, that many would turn to Jesus as a result of what is happening right now, through our witness and His work until the day when “men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.”

Watch for the signs. Be alert. Be ready. Be a light to others so that they will be too.

God bless, stay well
