Once again I’m showing my age as my point of reference for the above quote and picture is the original Start Trek series, before any of the films came out…the mission of the Starship Enterprise was, indeed, to “boldy go where no man has gone before”, discovering and exploring new planets – and for many people, today seems to be a bit like that. Sending our children back to a new way of schooling; maybe ourselves venturing forth once more into that strange solar system called “Office” and the planet “Work” in order to discover what life there is, if any, in this strange mid-Covid existence.
Many are anxious about this, even afraid. Some literally haven’t been out of the house since March. What will it be like? Is it safe? How do we operate in this new universe we find ourselves in? Today I’m praying for all those who have gone back to school/work, and those who are still thinking about it, that there may be a real sense of security and even a bit of a pioneering spirit in existence, that we will be brave and discover and experience new ways of living, working and studying.
And just as the crew of the Enterprise trusted their Captain (Kirk, not Picard), so we can trust ours, God Himself, Who says in Hebrews 13v5,“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
Not only that, but He promises to lead us forwards into the unknown – unknown to us, that is, but not to Him – and we have this promise from Psalm 139v5 where He says, “You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.” God Himself goes before us into the unknown, and He follows behind us to protect us and encourage us, so we can know that we are completely safe and secure in His love, even to being able to say, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I shall fear no evil, for you are with me, your rod and your staff they comfort me.”
In the words of the song by Chris Tomlin, “I know who goes before me, I know who stands behind; the God of Angel Armies is always by my side” We are never alone if we belong to Jesus. So whatever you are facing, remember that He is with you, and step out in faith and courage. We may have to boldly go where no man has gone before, but there is nowhere that Jesus has not already been. So step out with Him, and live long and prosper!
